Building My Arsenal, One Dumbbell at a Time

Posted by HuffandBuff at 5:56 AM

My very first piece of exercise equipment was a Denise Austin dumbbell tree with, what I believe was, sand-filled dumbbells (similar to photo above but the weights were green).  They have since seen their demise when one cracked and the sand came pouring out. My arsenal has grown leaps and bounds since then.  My dumbbells now consist of pairs of hex dumbbells ranging from 3-25 pounds.  I own a 60-lb barbell, tubing and resistance bands of different tensions, a 15lb body bar and 20lb kettlebell.  Ankle weights, wrist weights, a Fitness by Cathe 10-Pound X-Vestand weighted gloves; a yoga mat, an exercise mat, BOSU Balance Trainer, stability ball, medicine ball and balance board; a tall box, short box, club step, high step; a pull-up bar, a pull-up tower, a rebounder, Val-Slides, cross-trainers, running shoes.  And an iPod to view my Cathe downloads and listen to my Cardio Coach workouts.  Oh, I almost forgot the most important thing, a TV equipped with a VHS and DVD player.  I can’t do my exercise videos without one.

When I stop to think about how much I have spent on my fitness habit, let’s see...add the…carry the one…less the…well, actually, I don’t.  I figure there are worse things I could be spending my money on.  Besides it is an investment in my future health and well-being and I can’t put a price tag on that.  Happy Exercising Everyone!

Well, what do you know, it looks like there is plenty of room on the bottom shelf for more DVDs.

Wow Maria, you have a lot of fitness equipement!! I think it's great, would you recommend purchasing a barbell? I got the selectech weight after buying Chalene Extreme ( I did think long and hard about buying them because they are expensive). A year on, I can definitely say I'm glad I did. I just pre-ordered Bob Harper's dvds and the Montenegro Method. Tempted to get some of Tracie Long dvds, do you have any of hers? Love love to do fitness dvds- I try and do them before I go to work. I also love to spin in the gym ( like looking at the men in my spin class too, I even managed to get two dates from spin class!)

That's right, Maria, you have enough room on that shelf for more DVDs! What would you expect a vidiot to say? You have too many now? Hahahaha.

You got quite a collection there. And it always starts with one thing... My was actually two - a set of 5 lbs & 3 lbs dumbbells then followed by ankle weights. Fast forward, a collection of dummbells - 3 - 25 lbs, plates for barbells, bench, 3 steps, 3 Pilates circles, stairclimber, treadmill, 100 lb weight bag, one K-bell, 1 4lb ball (hate that thing), stability ball, bands, treadmill and over 100 videos/dvds and a partridge in a pair tree. :)

I don't want to tally up everything spent but whatever the grand total, like you said, there are worse things I could have spent money on. And it's not like this stuff collects dust. We use it all.

My next two big splurges will be an Elliptical & a Pilates Reformer. A girl can dream.

Hey Susan,

Do I recommend a barbell? I'm not sure. I have had mine for years. It seems that back in the day most of my workouts used it. Nowadays I don't find myself pulling it out as much. I use it most often for chest work and squats. But even then I am able to substitute dumbbells. I think it depends on how I am feeling on a particular day and if I am in the "mood" to change the weight plates to up or lower the weights. Had I not already had all my dumbbells, I totally would have invested in the SelectTech weights!! I'm glad you are enjoying them!

Susan,

I forgot to mention, the last Tracie Long workout I have was from when she was still with the Firm. I did not purchase any of her TLT, Longevity or Focus workouts - although I have been tempted. Montegro Method sounds appealing as well! The spending never ends...

Hey Maria,

Me Enable? Hahahaha. It's a hanging 100 lb bag that my husband bought me years ago. Every now and then I use it. It's fun and a good way to work out aggression.
